FAQ's

My electricity bill suddenly got a lot more expensive and I don't understand why. Can you help me?
Yes! We hear this a lot. We know that there are some unscrupulous third party energy companies who use very aggressive tactics to get people to switch their energy supplier, promising low rates. Oftentimes, they then increase the rates dramatically after an introductory period. Some of them even target low income communities, communities of color and the elderly. A report by the MA Attorney General’s Office showed that over 5 years, MA ratepayers overpaid $426 million due to these third party energy suppliers.
When you sign up for our Utility Bill Check Up, we can help you understand who your energy supplier is, whether you’re paying more than the Basic Rate from your utility, and the steps to cancel a harmful third party energy supplier contract. We can also connect you to your city’s community choice electricity program (if your city offers one), which often offer lower rates through bulk purchasing of energy for residents. It is always your choice what actions you want to take and we will NEVER change your electricity supplier for you.
I am afraid my utilities are going to get shut off. Can you help me?
Yes! We can help you enroll in a payment plan with the utilities. Once you are making on-time payments, you should be protected from a shut off. We can also help you sign up for the reduced gas and electric rates, if you are qualified based on your income.
How do you use my information?
We only use your information to help you understand your energy bill and the options you have to save energy and money. We are adding you to our newsletter, to receive information about educational resources or other programs that can help you save money on energy or connect to renewable energy. We will NEVER change your electricity supplier and it's always your choice what programs you want to take advantage of.
How can I sign up for the discounted electric rate?
You have to contact your electricity provider (National Grid, Eversource, etc.) and check the eligibility requirements. Generally you need to be receiving benefits like fuel assistance, MassHealth, food stamps, etc. to qualify.
How does Community Solar work?
Community Solar allows you to access the benefits of solar power - without installing solar panels on your roof and or paying any  upfront costs.   Whether you rent or own, you can get the benefits of solar energy by signing up for community solar!

You will join a local solar farm, with no installation fee or upfront payment requirements, and start saving money on your electric bill, while going green and supporting your local economy.

You do not have to switch your energy supplier, and you don’t need to install anything on your home. Community Solar allows you to save money on your electric bill and support local solar with no risk.
What's the difference between 3rd energy suppliers and the Community Solar program?
Community Solar helps you subscribe to a community solar garden and thus allows you to take advantage of solar energy with no risk.  on the other hand, third party energy suppliers are companies that ask to take over your electricity supply by offering competitive rates (please do your research before you sign any contracts)
